New curriculum implementation, education plan topics of WCPS board meeting – CentralAlbertaOnline.com

The Wolf Creek Public Schools board of trustees reviewed the progress on implementing the new curriculum and received an update on the development of the 2025-2029 education plan, and Indigenous education initiatives during the March 13 meeting.
Here are the meeting highlights:
2025 Edwin Parr Award Nomination
The Board approved the nomination of Heidi Cabay, a teacher at Crestomere School, as Wolf Creek Public Schools’ nominee for the 2025 ASBA Zone 4 Edwin Parr Award, which recognizes outstanding first-year teachers across Alberta. Cabay specializes in Early Childhood Education and is passionate about creating a safe, caring, and inclusive classroom. She is known for her ability to connect with students, foster creativity, and build strong relationships that support learning and personal growth. Her dedication to meeting the diverse needs of her students makes her an excellent representative for this prestigious award.
Deeper Implementation of New Curriculum
The Board received a report on continued curriculum support for teachers as they work with the new K-6 Language Arts curriculum. Based on teacher feedback, Education Services Coordinator Kaylene Reddekopp is leading a process this spring to help educators better understand grade-to-grade alignment and key student learning outcomes. Teachers will collaborate to develop guiding documents to support instruction. This approach will be reviewed and expanded to other curriculum areas in the future.
New School Resource Officer for Ponoka
The Board received a report on the new School Resource Officer (SRO) for Ponoka schools. Constable Allison Enright from the Ponoka RCMP has joined as the full-time SRO and has already begun connecting with students and staff at all three Ponoka schools — Ponoka Elementary School, Ponoka Secondary Campus, and the BRICK Learning Centre. With her addition, the SRO program is now fully staffed, ensuring continued support for school safety and student well-being.
Education Plan 2025-2029
The Board received an update on the development of the 2025-2029 Education Plan. Feedback from the Jan. 31, Stakeholders’ Summit has been shared with participants and will help shape the draft plan. Additional data from the division’s April 2025 survey, provincial surveys, and PAT and diploma results will further inform the plan. A draft will be presented to the Board for review in alignment with the budget process once the funding manual is received. The finalized plan must be submitted to Alberta Education by May 31.
Indigenous Education Team Updates
The Board received a report on recent Indigenous Education initiatives within the division. The Indigenous Education Team continues to support schools through cultural programming, student engagement activities, and community partnerships. Ongoing initiatives include professional learning for staff, increased opportunities for student participation in Indigenous cultural events, and collaboration with local Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
