First Lady champions school infrastructure preservation in Uganda

The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs Janet Kataaha Museveni, has expressed concern over rising cases of school property vandalism.

“I always get concerned about the high level of vandalism in schools by learners and sometimes even staff who do not value the importance of maintaining their school infrastructure and equipment,” she stated.

Mrs. Museveni expressed her concern during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new science block and opening of a new dormitory complex at St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) on Tuesday, November 5.

“It is quite painful to find new school buildings with electrical fittings removed, furniture damaged, laboratory equipment missing, windows broken, and sanitation facilities in a sorry state,” she added while calling for collective responsibility in preserving school property.

A release from her office sates that Mrs. Museveni challenged students and staff to embrace stewardship for future generations, emphasizing the importance of preserving school property. While cautioning students about the consequences of neglect, she said that the new infrastructure at SMACK would enhance learning conditions.

The First Lady emphasized that maintaining these facilities is crucial for the long-term success of both the institution and its students.

Reflecting on SMACK’s legacy since its founding by the White Fathers in 1906, Mrs. Museveni celebrated its consistent production of well-educated citizens who have significantly contributed to the nation. She highlighted several notable alumni who have become leaders in various fields, showcasing the school’s impact on Uganda’s development.

She also extended appreciation to the administration, Board of Governors, and parents for mobilizing resources to enhance school facilities and maintain SMACK’s reputation for excellence.

The First Lady advised students to value themselves and wisely choose the people they associate with, citing 1 Corinthians 15:33: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.'” She emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences to foster personal growth and academic success.

Addressing the issue of rising school fees, urged the community,” to consider voluntary mobilization of project resources from old students and well-wishers, without making it mandatory for all parents since many families are facing financial strain.”

Mrs. Museveni commended the collaboration among stakeholders in providing quality education and assured the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to supporting this effort.

“Education is a shared responsibility, and I am happy to see the Church, parents, alumni, and well-wishers working together to provide quality education for our country,” she remarked.

She outlined several initiatives the Ministry is undertaking to improve educational standards across Uganda, including teacher training programs and curriculum enhancements.

The First Lady encouraged students to commit to diligent study, reminding them of Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” She added, “I pray for all of you and trust that God will grant you good health, wisdom, and well-deserved success in your exams.”

Mrs Museveni also expressed her gratitude to the foundation body, the archbishop, and the Brothers of Christian Instruction for their continued dedication to the school’s mission, stating, “St. Mary’s College Kisubi stands as a testament to a mission well accomplished.”

The event showcased student-led projects including an electric engine, a virtual tourism app, and eco-friendly innovations, underscoring the students’ focus on energy and environmental sustainability. These projects demonstrated the practical application of knowledge gained in the classroom and highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing innovation and creativity among its students.

Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to quality education, Dr. Kedrace Turyagenda, Permanent Secretary for the education ministry.

highlighted ongoing curriculum reforms and efforts to improve teacher welfare, particularly addressing the issue of science teachers working multiple jobs.

Dr Turyagenda noted that the ministry aims to secure a staff allocation of 21 to 40 government-paid teachers for St. Mary’s College Kisubi and is actively developing sustainable solutions to increase this number.

The Permanent Secretary also expressed special gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for his support of Uganda’s educational growth.

“His Excellency’s commitment to education, national unity, and development has created a foundation for accessible, quality education. His vision is one of a strong, educated Uganda, and we are honoured to carry forward this vision in our classrooms and communities,” she noted.

Dr. Turyagenda extended her appreciation to the SMACK community, acknowledging the roles played by the Board of Governors, PTA, Headteacher, and parents in creating a supportive environment for students.

Appreciating the First Lady’s visit and contribution to the school, Dr Saturninus Kasozi-Mulindwa, Chairman of the Board of Governors at St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), said that apart from being the line minister, Mrs, Museveni is a valued former parent of SMACK, since her son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who studied at the same college is an active member of the SMACK Old Boys Association (SMACKOBA).

Dr Kasozi-Mulindwa expressed gratitude to the Minister for her steadfast support and guidance during a recent transition period, and highlighted positive changes under Rev. Brother Simeon Simon Mpanga’s leadership, including infrastructure developments aligned with national science education initiatives.

He described the inauguration of a new dormitory and the commencement of construction on a Science Block as milestones in the College’s development. Establishment of the Science Block, he added is an initiative to promote science education in Uganda.

Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo, Vice Chairman of the PTA, praised Brother Mpanga’s leadership. Highlighting SMACK’s commitment to quality education, he quoted C.S. Lewis, saying, “The task of a modern educator is not to cut down jungles but to irrigate deserts,” reflecting the nurturing approach of the new headteacher. Regarding the new projects, he announced plans to set up a new dining complex in a campaign driven by teachers.

Rev. Brother Simon Simeon Mpanga, SMACK Headteacher, expressed deep appreciation for the Minister’s tireless support, noting the symbolic importance of naming the science block after her.

He highlighted the school’s culture of discipline, faith, and academic excellence, and noted the dedication of the school’s staff and the importance of ongoing professional development. Brother Mpanga shared his vision for integrating technology and traditional values to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.

Joshua Wachemba, SMACK Head Prefect encouraged fellow students to commit to excellence and make the best use of the new resources, echoing the First Lady’s call for responsible stewardship of school property.
