Working After Cancer Cancer is a disease that is caused by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in different parts of the body. It leads to uncontrolled growth in the body that causes a lump called a tumor. After successful cancer treatment people can always go back to work. If you go back to work immediately after the treatment you will find it helpful in maintaining the sense of who you are and how you fit in. By going back to work you will be boosting your self-esteem and your income. Your job will remind you that you have a life far away from cancer. When you go back to work you can become a valued employee, a trusted worker and a valued boss. At work you will be having a regular contact with people and they will assist you in forgetting the difficulties you underwent the treatment. When you are undergoing the treatment you were feeling isolated and alone but at work you will feel more comfortable because you will be having people around you. It is good to communicate to your employer before going back to work and they will let you know the options they have. As you take the job ask them if they can offer you a job that will ease your mind and body. Some people will cope very fast with going back to work and others will take some time. You will find it difficult for you to focus when you go back to work at first but with time you will cope. At work you should take care of yourself as you try to cope with the normal life. Your co-workers can help you get back to work. Check on how open you are with your co-workers and if you can speak to them about your cancer sickness and treatment. In some working environments you will not benefit sharing your cancer experience. In institutions that are very competitive and fast paced working environments don’t share your experience. If you don’t get an opportunity to share your experience you should never feel pressured. If you manage to go back to work after the cancer treatment make sure you seek legal protection. You are supposed to have the same rights and opportunities like other employees despite your condition. How you should be treated at work should entirely depend on your qualifications and abilities. Legally you are not supposed to be fired because you are sick as long as you are fulfilling your duties and responsibilities. After the cancer treatment and yo want to go back to work consider the accommodations at work. The employer should not lower the standards so that they can accommodate an employee. Why Resources Aren’t As Bad As You Think
